What is Periodontology?

Periodontology is the area of dentistry concerned with the gums and the tissues and bone supporting the teeth, as well as the tissues surrounding dental implants.

Gum disease can range from early gum inflammation to more advanced periodontal disease, where the tissues supporting the teeth can become affected.

Importantly, gum problems do not always cause obvious pain. Some patients may notice bleeding or swelling,

while others may have periodontal problems identified during a routine dental or hygiene appointment.

Here at Abacus Dental & Implant Clinic, Milton Keynes we believe strongly that early assessment and

appropriate treatment can play an important role in helping to maintain healthy gums and supporting tissues.

When might you need a periodontal assessment?

There are several signs that may indicate that further assessment of your gum health would be beneficial.

These can include:

Bleeding when brushing or flossing
Red, swollen or tender gums
Gum recession
Persistent bad breath
Loose or mobile teeth
Changes in the position or spacing of your teeth
Repeated or persistent gum problems
A previous diagnosis of periodontal disease
Concerns about the tissues around a dental implant
Being advised by your dentist or hygienist that you may benefit from further periodontal assessment

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, we recommend discussing your concerns with your dentist or dental hygienist.

Where appropriate, they may recommend an appointment with Dr Fallah at Abacus Dental & Implant Clinic, Milton Keynes for a periodontal assessment.

Periodontal care available at Abacus Dental & Implant Clinic

Dr Fallah accepts referrals for a range of periodontal conditions and treatments, including:

Periodontal consultations and second opinions

A consultation provides an opportunity to assess your gum health in more detail and discuss any concerns you may have.

Dr Fallah also accepts referrals for second opinions, which can be particularly helpful if you have ongoing gum problems or have been advised that you may require more complex periodontal treatment. Please call 01908260757 or email smile@abacusdental.com to make an appointment at Abacus Dental & Implant Clinic, Milton Keynes.

Non-surgical periodontal treatment

Non-surgical periodontal treatment is commonly used to manage gum disease and improve the health of the tissues surrounding the teeth.

Here at Abacus Dental & Implant Clinic, Milton Keynes your treatment will always be tailored to your individual needs following assessment.

Regenerative periodontal treatment

In selected cases, regenerative treatment may be considered where periodontal disease has resulted in the loss of supporting tissues.

Dr Fallah can assess whether this type of treatment may be appropriate based on your individual clinical circumstances.

Open flap debridement

For some patients with more advanced periodontal problems, access to areas beneath the gum may be required to allow more thorough treatment.

Open flap debridement is a periodontal surgical procedure that provides access to affected areas beneath the gum.

Adjunctive periodontal treatment

Depending on your individual needs, additional or adjunctive treatments may be considered alongside other periodontal treatment.

Dr Fallah will assess your circumstances and explain the available options with you.

Looking after the tissues around dental implants

Dental implants can provide an effective way of replacing missing teeth, but just like natural teeth, they require appropriate care and maintenance.

Inflammation around a dental implant can affect the surrounding soft tissues and, in some cases, the supporting bone.

Here at Abacus Dental & Implant Clinic, Milton Keynes Dr Fallah accepts referrals for peri-mucositis and peri-implantitis,

allowing patients with concerns around their dental implants to receive focused assessment and treatment.

If you have noticed bleeding, swelling, discomfort or other changes around a dental implant, it is important to have the area assessed.

Why is gum health important?

Your gums play an essential role in supporting your teeth.

Healthy gums should generally be firm and comfortable, without persistent bleeding or swelling. When gum disease develops, inflammation can affect the tissues surrounding the teeth and, in more advanced cases, the supporting structures.

Here at Abacus Dental & Implant Clinic, Milton Keynes we believe maintaining good oral hygiene, attending regular dental and hygiene appointments and addressing problems when they arise can all contribute to maintaining good gum health.

For patients who require additional assessment or treatment, having access to a dentist with postgraduate training and a special interest in Periodontology provides another option within our practice.
