Good dental hygiene and preventative dental care is the most effective way of maintaining healthy teeth and gums.

What is dental hygiene?

At Abacus Dental Care Milton Keynes, regular effective dental care is an important way we look after our patient’s oral health. Your own oral hygiene is absolutely essential before being able to carry out any dental treatment and also in improving its long-term success with the main goal being plaque control.

Good dental hygiene and regular appointments with our hygienist can significantly help reduce the risk of tooth decay, cavities and gum disease. Healthy teeth give you the advantage of a radiant smile.

How often should I see the dental hygienist?

At Abacus Dental Care in Milton Keynes we recommend you come in for a dental check-up and Dental hygiene cleaning every six months, regular monitoring will allow any oral health issues to be identified at their earliest stages to allow effective treatment.

Professional cleaning removes plaque and tartar build-up, as well as bacteria that can accumulate in hard to reach areas. We can also advise you on the most effective way to look after your teeth with an optimal daily oral-health routine.

Can I improve dental hygiene at home?

Brushing at least twice daily for two minutes before bedtime and one other time during the day with the appropriate fluoride toothpaste is a good basis to ensure good dental hygiene.

We recommend cleaning between your teeth whether it be with floss or interdental brushes at least once a day to dislodge plaque that accumulates in-between your teeth. You should also change your toothbrush every 3 months to ensure it is still effective in removing all plaque deposits to keep your teeth and gums healthy.

Reducing the risks of dental problems

In addition to good dental hygiene at home and regular check-ups, healthy lifestyle choices can reduce gum disease and tooth decay as well as improving the appearance of your teeth:

  • Eating a well-balanced diet
  • Taking regular physical exercise
  • Limiting smoking and use of tobacco products
  • Reducing the frequency of high sugar content food and drinks
